Natural Treatments for Dandruff and Scalp Conditions
As naturals, we live for wearing our hair out, even if it is ONLY for one day in each month (or longer) when we release our tresses from their protective styles, and say - Yes! - to life, rocking our favourite braidout, twistout, wash-n-go or flat-ironed do. *This post contains affiliate links.
But, what do you do when you CAN'T because of the fear of embarrassment that others will see the white flakes in your hair, or reddened scalp? Worse yet, what if they stay away from you because your hand is constantly in your hair, scratching at your scalp? If you have dandruff or other scalp issue, there is hope.
*Check with your dermatologist before you begin any treatment, including natural treatments, of your scalp issues*
DANDRUFF (pityriasis capitis)
What is dandruff? Dandruff is THE MOST COMMON scalp condition known to man, and affects males and females of every race....and hair type. Dandruff is likely to begin anytime after puberty has set in, but is observed to improve as you get older.
Dandruff is believed to be caused by:
a. an overgrowth of Malassezia, a yeast-like fungus which causes flaky, itching skin
b. Seborrheic dermatitis (called 'cradle cap' in infants) which is an over-production of sebum (natural scalp oil) which accummulates on the skin's surface and hardens, appearing like a solid, white or pale-yellow substance
c. Psoriasis which is a painful and inflaming condition caused when a false infection-alert response in the body causes an over-production of skin cells, which rise up to the surface of the skin resulting in thick, scaly skin.
d. Triggers, such as sensitivity to certain ingredients in products that come in contact with your skin, like shampoos, pomades and hair dyes
e. A food diet lacking in zinc, certain B vitamins and specific fats
f. Stress
Okay, so how do you treat these conditions, naturally?
First things first, there is no real CURE for dandruff. It is quite possible to alleviate the condition with over-the-counter medication, and medicated shampoos, but the likelihood of it returning is high, especially if hair conditions (such as a greasy scalp) are just right. Psoriasis and Seborrheic dematitis are best treated with medication, but vitamin supplements, a healthy diet and use of heavy moisturizing agents like oils do relieve the condition.
Natural Hair Care Treatments
a. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)
One of my FAVE natural products to use on my skin and hair, organic, raw apple cider vinegar is fantastic for minimizing dandruff, and alleviating an itchy, dry, flaky scalp.
Effects:
- Anti-inflammatory
-The acetic acid restores pH balance therefore killing the causes of dandruff e.g. fungus
How to apply:
For mild scalp issues, equal parts of ACV to water as a rinse after shampooing is fine. For moderate and severe cases, increase the strength of the ACV.
b. Organic Cococut Oil (OCO)
If you read my last post, you would know that I am tremendously satisfied with the effects of organic coconut oil in my hair and on my skin. Guess what? It can also be used as a highly effective retardant to dandruff caused by an irritated scalp.
Effects:
- Anti-fungal therefore eliminating the fungus that can cause some dandruff
- Moisturizing therefore relieving itching
You can also use lemons (in the place of Apple Cider Vinegar) and Organic Extra-Virgin Olive Oil in the place of coconut oil.
c. Baking Soda
This is a favourite home remedy of many, and now we have a use for it in our hair.
When mixed with a little water, baking soda turns into a smooth but gentle exfoliant which can be rubbed onto the scalp to remove excess buildup of skin cells.
When using this method, refrain from shampooing afterwards.
