How I Use Coconut Oil in My Hair
Disclaimer: This is my unpaid review of the Now Foods Organic Virgin Coconut Oil.
Hi there! It has been a while since I have used coconut oil - to be honest, I stayed far away from it! When I was younger, my grandmother made a high quality oil, but the taste (however delicious to some people) was too overpowering for me. Everything on my plate would taste of coconut oil, and I did not like it! Fast track to 2016, and I became interested in the oil for its benefits on brain health and hair. I purchased a bottle from a Health Food Store, hesitating only a little because of its price tag (I'm still an undergraduate student - lol). I appreciated that it was in liquid form. Quality coconut oil should be in a liquid state in warmer temperatures, and in the islands, it's warm. I read the label and was satisfied with the 1-ingredient list - organic virgin coconut oil. It also stated that it was Non-GMO certified. The extraction process was via first cold press which ensures that the oil maintains the beneficial medium chain triglycerides (MCT).
When I arrived home, and I opened the cap, I was pleasantly surprised that it came with a protective seal. To me, that was another assurance of the quality of this product. It was the smell, however, that was the high point for me - it literally smelled like coconut candy. Actually, it took me a few days to figure out what that heavenly smell reminded me of. It made me want to drink it right then, right there. It is also safe for consumption, I should add. Hair Application - I use it as a moisturizer, but it detangles as well.
I use the generous amounts of the coconut oil in the following ways: 1. As my only leave-in on damp hair straight after washing my hair - On freshly-washed detangled hair, I pour the oil in my hand and add it to my hair. I massage my scalp with it, and smooth it all along the hair shaft and of course, the ends. Coconut oil really doesn't have much slip when your hair is wet, but just put sufficient. Do not overdo it because the oil is very thin and tends to run onto your neck and shoulders. When your hair is dry, wow! the softness will surprise you. 2. As a moisturizer on dry hair - when I am retwisting my hair, I usually add some coconut oil to my hands and smooth it over my hair. I may even add some to the individual twists, if necessary. You will find that once properly moisturized on wash day with coconut oil, re-application at least for a few days (depending on how you wear your hair) is not necessary. I posted a review of Now Foods Organic Virgin Coconut Oil on Amazon recently to share how pleased I was with their product. View the product and my review here.
